North-south Trade and the Dynamics of Renewable Resources

چکیده
This paper studies a general equilibrium North-South economy consisting of two countries which produce and trade two goods using two inputs of production . It extends the North-South trade model of Chichilmsky (1981, 1986) by assuming that one input of production is a renewable resource which follows its own physical dynamics . From these dynamics and from optimal extraction behavior we derive explicitly the supply of environmental inputs as a function of their market prices . Therefore this paper fully derives the price dependence of inputs which is postulated exogenously in the original North-South model . All markets for goods and for inputs are free and competitive throughout . We establish that different property regimes lead to different supply functions for environmental resources . When property rights are well defined (as in the North) the supply of environmental inputs is less price responsive than it is when property rights are ill defined (as in the South) . Ill defined property rights lead to an apparent `abundance' of environmental resour s in the south . We establish that the difference in property rights in two otherwise identicalregions (the same technologies, preferences, and endowments) is itself sufficient to explain why the two regions trade . The region with ill defined property rights exports the environmentally intensive good . This leads to overuse of the environment worldwide and to lower market prices of environmentally intensive goods . The difference in property rights of the two regions determines an apparent `comparative advantage' in the export of environmentally intensive goods in the South, even when the two countries are identical and therefore there is no real comparative advantages . The difference in property rights also gives rise to 'apparent' gains from trade, even when there are no real gains from trade .

متن کاملWater Resources Management in the South of Kerman Province Using the System Dynamics Model
Integrated water resources management is recognized as one of the main needs of any society due to population growth and technological advancement. To implement integrated water resources management, modeling of this system is essential. On the other hand, water resources systems are highly complex and affected by various factors that are very difficult to identify and determine their role in w...
متن کاملA Panel Data Analysis of South Korea’s Trade with OPEC Member Countries: The Gravity Model Approach
Abstract T his paper explains bilateral trade patterns between South Korea and thirteen OPEC member countries over the period 1980-2014 using a gravity model. The estimation results show that the gravity equation fits the data reasonably well. We confirmed the existence of long term relationships between the bilateral trade flows and the main components of gravity model - ...

Trade and Migration with Renewable Natural Resources: Out-of-Steady-State Dynamics Commodity price increases associated with the entry of China, India and other countries into the world economy has led to increased pressure on common-property renewable natural resources (NR). The problem is particularly worrisome for economies that obtain a large share of their income from the exploitation of N...
متن کاملModeling the Differences and Conflicts between North and South in the Context of Global Sustainability
ABSTRACT Today, the world is divided into two main blocks: Developed nations with excess capital, or North, and developing nations with excess labor, or South. It is a widely accepted fact that interactions and conflicts between these two blocks play a major role in the context of global sustainability. In this paper, a global SD model with North-South differentiation is built in order to inves...
